Sheri Leilani is a contemporary visionary artist and romantic symbolist who lives @cactuspalacestudios looking out to sea from the hill tops in the lush hinterland of the Byron Bay Shire. Born in New Zealand, Sheri spent her childhood exploring the natural surroundings of the countryside on horse back. Sheri has always been fascinated by nature which inspired her first drawings and paintings at a very early age. After moving to Australia in her teenage years her love and passion for creating art grew. At the age of sixteen Sheri left her family and Victorian country town and moved to Melbourne to begin her studies at Art School, firstly studying for one year at Box Hill College where she explored with total passion sculpture, ceramics, painting, printmaking, life drawing, photography and art history . Sheri was then excepted into the highly acclaimed Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne where she completed a 3 year Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in sculpture, graduating with a distinction. In her early twenties Sheri left the city to travel the world for 2 years, exploring and studying different cultures and tribal areas, falling in love with the high Himalayas, all which continue to be major inspirations for her art today and she frequently travels to return to these far away inspirational places . Sheri has worked extensively in the areas of assemblage art and wearable art but most recently has been developing a series of visionary artworks, with oil on canvas where she creates nested compositions within mountainous landscapes, capturing aspects of the alchemy of life and it’s divinity though the use of symbols , figurative elements and stories in pictorial language.
